President Biden Announces New Actions To Battle The COVID-19 Omicron Variant

Three weeks ago, President Biden laid out a COVID-19 Action Plan for the winter that prepared us for this moment. Yesterday, he announced how we’re making the plan even stronger.

What Role Should Religion Play When It Comes To COVID-19 Vaccines?

An actor on an American soap opera recently sought to sidestep a COVID-19 vaccination mandate by doing something fairly common: requesting a religious exemption. Less common was the way his employment was killed off in a dramatic tunnel collapse after the request was denied.

Applications for religious exemptions are on the rise, amid new mandates designed to check the Omicron variant and contain the pandemic. New York City has unveiled plans for a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all private employers, Greece has a mandate lined up for people over 60, and South Africa is considering its own versions.

Employers and schools may struggle to discern the requests for religious exemptions from mandates like these that are genuinely sincere – and puzzle over how to respect an applicant’s beliefs while also preventing the harm they may inflict on others. Some places simply decided this isn’t possible, and stopped making faith-based dispensations.

Research overwhelmingly indicates that getting vaccinated is the best way to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Most religious leaders are framing their messaging accordingly.

“It’s actually a mitzvah,” one rabbi told a reporter, referring to deeds performed to fulfil divine commandments.      Read More

BREAKING: DC Will Require Vaccination To Enter Restaurants, Other Indoor Businesses

DC will require COVID-19 vaccination at restaurants, gyms, entertainment facilities, and other indoor venues beginning Jan. 15, joining a growing list of major US cities to institute the requirement as the Omicron variant spreads.

The district's Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Wednesday that patrons ages 12 and older at numerous indoor venues will be required to show proof of coronavirus vaccination to enter under new rules she plans to unveil next month.

Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, theaters, museums, and gyms are among the places cited by Bowser. Grocery stores and houses of worship will be exempt.

The businesses will be required to check vaccine cards or a printout, photograph, or app showing COVID-19 vaccination status, Bowser stated, noting that proof of a negative coronavirus test will not be allowed as an alternative.

Fourth COVID-19 Shot Needed, Says German Health Minister

BERLIN, Dec 22 (Reuters) - German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Wednesday that a fourth vaccination will be necessary in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic due to the more contagious Omicron variant.

He said that Germany has ordered 80 million doses of a vaccine made by Biontech specifically targeting Omicron and should arrive in April or May.

Germany has also ordered four million doses of the newly approved vaccine Novavax - seen as more acceptable to vaccine sceptics - and 11 million doses of the new Valneva shot, which is waiting for marketing authorisation, Lauterbach said.

The Novavax shots will arrive in the country in January, Lauterbach told a news conference.

"An offensive booster campaign is our most important building block in the fight against Omicron," the health minister said.

Lauterbach threw his support behind a general vaccine mandate, saying that without one, it would not be possible to manage coming waves of infection over the long term.

According to Lothar Wieler, president of Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases, Omicron will be responsible for most coronavirus infections in Germany within three weeks. Read More

Bill Gates Predicts 'The Worst Part Of The Pandemic' Is Coming

Bill Gates said he called off his holiday plans as the omicron variant ushers in what he predicts could be the "worst part of the pandemic." He also predicted, however, that the current surge in COVID-19 cases could be over within months, and the pandemic itself may end next year “if we take the right steps.”

“Just when it seemed like life would return to normal, we could be entering the worst part of the pandemic,” he tweeted on Tuesday. "Omicron will hit home for all of us. Close friends of mine now have it, and I’ve canceled most of my holiday plans.”

In his thread, Gates said the omicron outbreak could be the worst so far in the pandemic because of how quickly it spreads. He urged people to wear masks, avoid large indoor crowds and get the COVID-19 booster shot. “Omicron is spreading faster than any virus in history,” he tweeted. “It will soon be in every country in the world.”

Health professionals agree with Gates, saying the U.S. may see a record number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations as omicron circulates more quickly than other variants. Government officials are creating a website where people can order at-home virus tests and are working to send out hundreds of millions of tests.

Trump Says He's 'Very Appreciative' And 'Surprised' Biden Thanked Previous Administration For Helping Make The COVID Vaccine Available To The Public

Donald Trump on Tuesday evening said he was 'very appreciative' of President Joe Biden paying tribute to his administration's efforts to create the vaccine - adding that he was 'surprised to hear it.'

Biden several hours prior had commended his predecessor for leading efforts to make the U.S. one of the first countries in the world to get a vaccine against COVID-19.

'Thanks to the prior administration and our scientific community, America is one of the first countries to get the vaccine,' Biden said Tuesday afternoon.

'Thanks to my administration and the hard work of Americans, we led a rollout that made America among the world leaders in getting shots in arms,' the president added.

Trump, who has frequently complained about not getting enough credit for his decisions in pushing the vaccine manufacture, said he was pleasantly surprised by the president's words.

'I'm very appreciative of that - I was surprised to hear it,' Trump told Fox News Digital.

The comment comes as the U.S. sees a surge in COVID cases, with some states seeing unprecedented numbers of new cases since the pandemic began - and as the highly transmissible Omicron variant continues to spread across the nation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data this week showing that Omicron now accounts for 73 percent of U.S. Covid cases. The prevalence of the variant has jumped six fold week-over-week, from 2.9 percent to 12.6 percent, and has overtaken the Delta variant, which had been the nation's dominant strain since July.  Read More
